A Little Taste of HomeSchool

Last month, we decided to pull Logan out of preschool. Not for any one reason really, except that it was more work on me to get three kids out of the house and most days I was waking up BOTH babies in the afternoon in order to pick him up. At this time in my life, that was too much. There were a lot of things that helped me make this decision, but I don't need to go into all my personal thoughts here! :-)

He truly enjoyed school, no doubt, but he is loving being home just the same now and we've decided to tap into his little brain ourselves for the time being. He has been showing so many signs of reading readiness that I figured it couldn't hurt to really jump on his enthusiasm and see what we could do.

I read the Duggar's book and THIS curriculum is what she uses with her kids around age 5, so I figured I'd give it a shot. For starters, it's really cheap, so why not at least try, right?!?! It starts out really slow and I've gotten a lot of, "I already know that mom" in the first two days, but I'm following the program and after reading all the rave reviews on Amazon, I'm excited for his success!

Here is his "desk" set up

I went to the teacher store and bought a 100 square chart (since there are 100 lessons in the curriculum) and each day he gets to put a sticker and I write the date on the lesson we finished. Why not incorporate some math? How many have we done? How many do we have left? He LOVES numbers, so it's come in handy for a few things already!

So excited, really!!!

I should've known he'd take to this so well... this morning (day 2) he was begging to do it while the babies were still awake. I for one, don't have that mentality, so for now it will have to be during the babies' morning nap time... so he kept checking the clock to see when 9:30 would be there so the babies could go to bed and he could get to work! I love his enthusiasm for learning and look forward to him really learning how to read and being able to enjoy reading!

Another big bonus to this curriculum is that writing is involved too. He already knows how to write his letters, capital and lower case, but we are going to focus on writing them to scale now that I've gotten my hands on a lined wipe off board. Yesterday he wouldn't erase his work because he wanted to show Grandma when she got here. Again, what great enthusiasm he has!

I have no idea what the future holds for my family as far as school is concerned... God is teaching me to think about right now and school for Logan is still a year and a half away, so we'll pray and think on that later! BUT, for right now, this is the best choice I've made for my family in a long time and I'm so thankful for this one on one time each day!

We have more things started and more on my mind for incorporating scripture memory and some other fun things, but I'll post on those once I can report on how we're doing.
